John M. Lewis, Associate Professor of English in Dedman College, earned his B.A. summa cum laude and A.M. from Harvard University, where he won a Woodrow Wilson Honorary Fellowship and Danforth Fellowship and was a member of the prestigious Society of Fellows. He joined the SMU faculty in 1970. His teaching fields have included American literature, history and structure of English, and genre studies. His diverse courses have ranged from classics to medieval literature to Jack Kerouac, and even intermediate Latin. Professor Lewis is known for his capacious memory and his knowledge of an untold number of languages. The legendary teacher has been honored with a Rotunda Outstanding Professor Award, Phi Beta Kappa Perrine Prize for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship, Maguire Teaching Fellow Award from the Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility, teaching award from the Women's Studies Council and the "M" Award for outstanding service to the University. He has published and presented papers on topics ranging from The Aeneid to William Faulkner. He wrote arts reviews for the Dallas Observer for many years and received a Katie Award for arts criticism from the Press Club of Dallas. He retires as Professor Emeritus of English.
